Bong Joon Ho
Bong Joon-hoĀ (Korean:Ā ė“ģ¤ķø,Ā Korean pronunciation:[poĖÅĀ tÉuĖnhoĀ āĀ poĖÅdŹunɦo]; born September 14, 1969) is a South Korean filmmaker. The recipient of threeĀ Academy Awards,Ā his workĀ is characterised by emphasis on social and class themes,Ā genre-mixing,Ā dark comedy, and sudden tone shifts.
He first became known to audiences and achieved aĀ cult followingĀ with his directorial debut film, the black comedyĀ Barking Dogs Never BiteĀ (2000), before achieving both critical and commercial success with his subsequent films: the crime thrillerĀ Memories of MurderĀ (2003), the monster filmĀ The HostĀ (2006), the science fiction action filmĀ SnowpiercerĀ (2013), which served as Bong's English language debut, and the acclaimed black comedy thrillerĀ ParasiteĀ (2019), all of which are among theĀ highest-grossing films in South Korea, withĀ ParasiteĀ also being the highest-grossing South Korean film in history.
All of Bong's films have been South Korean productions. However,Ā Snowpiercer,Ā OkjaĀ (2017) and Mickey 17Ā (2025) areĀ Hollywood co-productions with significant use of the English language. Two of his films have been screened in competitions at theĀ Cannes Film Festival ā OkjaĀ inĀ 2017Ā andĀ ParasiteĀ inĀ 2019; the latter earned theĀ Palme d'Or, the first for a South Korean film.Ā Considered an immediate favourite by theĀ Academy Awards,Ā ParasiteĀ became the first South Korean film to receive Academy Award nominations, with Bong winningĀ Best Picture,Ā Best Director, andĀ Best Original Screenplay, makingĀ ParasiteĀ the first film in the award's history not in English to win Best Picture.Ā In 2017, Bong was included onĀ Metacritic's list of the 25 best film directors of the 21st century.Ā In 2020, Bong was included inĀ Time's annual list ofĀ 100 Most Influential PeopleĀ andĀ BloombergĀ 50.
